Schoenorchis
Orchid of Peninsular Malaya Under: Genera
Schoenorchis Blume
in Bijdragen tot de Flora van Nederlandsch Indie 6:t..3, t.43(1967).
DERIVATION OF GENUS NAME:
First described by Carl Blume in 1825 from the Greek schoinos = a rush, sedge and orchis = orchid referring to the somewhat rush-like leaves of these orchids. The ten to possibly twenty four species now accepted in this genus were included in the genus Saccolabium by J.J. Smith in 1906. In 1913 Schlechter confirmed and agreed that the genus Schoenorchis is valid and added five more species from New Guinea. The species in the genus are distributed from South-east Asia to New Guinea, some Pacific Islands and three species in Australia.
TYPE SPECIES:
Schoenorchis juncifolia Blume.
Small, monopodial epiphytic herbs, often growing in a tangled clump with branching erect or pendulous stems. The lateral inflorescence carries many minute flowers which are not spreading widely giving them a bell-shaped appearance.
Conservation status:
not known
